Depression

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions. The word depression is often misused. For instance, some use it when they are feeling very sad. However, it is important to understand that depression is a mental health condition and it can interfere with one’s ability to carry out daily tasks such as going to work and relationships with others.

In order to be diagnosed with depression, one must experience five or more of the following symptoms for at least two weeks:

  • Extreme feelings of sadness
  • Crying a lot or feeling the need to cry but cannot
  • Hopelessness
  • No longer interested or enjoys activities which used to be interesting
  • Change in sleeping patterns – sleeping too much or too little
  • Change in appetite – eating too much or too little
  • Lack of energy
  • Feelings of guilt and of worthlessness
  • Lack of self-hygiene
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Anxiety
  • Thoughts about death and suicide
