Negative attitudes about mental health lead to discrimination against those who suffer from a mental health condition and this leads to stigma. There are two types of stigma. Social Stigma is when one is judged and discriminated based on his or her mental health condition. Self-Stigma on the other hand, is when one starts to believe that the discrimination experienced is valid. This creates emotions of shame and one can avoid seeking help because of it. Even if one does seek help, discrimination hinders progress.

L-istigma tista’ tkun ta’ natura soċjali fejn wieħed jiġi ġġudikat u ddiskriminat minnħabba problema ta’ saħħa mentali li jkun għaddej minnha, jew inkella stigma fuq wieħed innifsu. Din twassal sabiex wieħed jibda jemmen li id-diskriminazzjoni li qed jirċievi min-nies ta’ madwaru hija ġustifikata. Kawża ta’ dan, jinħolqu emozzjonijiet ta’ mistħija bl-impatt li bniedem jevita li jfittex l-għajnuna. L-istigma tista’ wkoll twaqqaf bniedem milli jagħmel progress.
